Thursday Prompts for Students

Think Outside The Box Thursday

Behind "Warm a Heart Wednesday", this is my second favorite prompt! This prompt requires the students to use their critical thinking skills and think beyond what their brain sees first. It requires the students to use their creativity and artistic side to explore what a set of lines could possible become and look like! For this prompt you can think of any simple picture (heart, smiley face, pineapple, tree, etc.) but you only draw half of it! You tell your students that it CANNOT be that shape but in fact, it must be something else. So if you choose a heart, you would draw half of a heart and instruct the students to create a picture using the same lines except their end result cannot be a heart. It requires the students to think beyond their initial reaction and search deep for a new result. My students love this one because it starts their day off with some doodling and coloring. Who wouldn't love using smelly markers at 8:45 in the morning?! By using this prompt, you will be able to see your student's critical thinking abilities improve as the year goes!

Thinking of You Thursday

This is a new prompt that I am going to implement this fall. This prompt requires students to think about someone who has treated them with respect and kindness, made them feel happy and loved, and having them show they appreciate those actions. I can foresee many students thinking of their parents right away and that is a perfect place to start! This prompt teaches students to recognize when and how to show someone they appreciate what they have done for them. For this prompt I am going to have my students write the name of the person that they want to show their thanks to on their sticky note along with why. Then during the day I'll give them time to create something, a card, a letter, a picture, that shows they appreciate what that person has done for them. This will be a great reflective prompt that will show the students that showing their appreciation for others will lead to continuous support from those around them.
