Examples of a Morning Message

Stephanie

In my morning message I like to present it as a friendly letter format so that my students have consistent exposure to this type of writing. They love writing letters to their peers, family members, and other teachers, so seeing their morning message in this format is a consistent reminder of what a friendly letter should have and what it should look like. I also greet my students based on our building theme (last year was being a crew on a boat/nautical). I like to go through a brief run down of the day and mention anything that is different from their normal schedule and/or remind them of important events or activities that they can work on or prepare for. I put a first grade level trivia question at the end of each message which directly ties into an activity our building does towards the end of winter.

In the beginning of the year my messages are much shorter since the students and I are just learning about each other and going over routines. Occasionally I will also make a purposeful editing mistakes to see if my student's can find them. Just another great way to practice current first grade skills in a daily routine. Plus it also shows them that even teachers make mistakes!
